LAS VEGAS (October 17, 2007) – His nostalgic artwork has touched Americans for generations. And, now, some of famed 20th Century artist Norman Rockwell’s illustrations are on display at Town Square Las Vegas through interactive life-sized replicas of several covers he created for The Saturday Evening Post.
Norman Rockwell HOLIDAYS, featuring memorable covers from the nation’s oldest magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, takes visitors on an educational journey back in time. Town Square, a shopping, dining and entertainment center, is the first shopping center in the United States to provide a home for this type of Rockwell display. There is no cost to view the Norman Rockwell displays, which come complete with informational audio. The exhibit includes the following covers from The Saturday Evening Post and Country Gentlemen:
• Santa and His Helpers, The Saturday Evening Post in 1922
• Santa Consulting Globe, The Saturday Evening Post in 1926
• Grandfather and Boy on Rocking Horse, The Saturday Evening Post in 1933
• Santa Reading Mail, The Saturday Evening Post in 1935
• Christmas, first printed on the cover of the Country Gentlemen in 1920
The Town Square holiday display also features a traditional 40-foot Christmas tree and a 30-by-30 foot Santa house, reminiscent of Norman Rockwell’s studio. Children can visit Santa’s house to share their holiday wish list and take a keepsake photo with Santa. Families can enjoy Rockwell’s iconic Triple Self-Portrait, first printed in his autobiography My Adventures as an Illustrator in 1960 and then reprinted on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post later that year.
Turnberry Associates, creators of Town Square Las Vegas, brought the Rockwell exhibit to life to share the artist’s nostalgic representation of Americana with residents in the Las Vegas Valley.
“At Turnberry, we strive to enrich lives and foster the same sense of family values that Norman Rockwell captured over the years,” said Mike Wethington, Town Square general manager. “In celebration of Town Square’s opening we’re proud to offer local Las Vegas residents a holiday program they’ll cherish for years to come.”
The Norman Rockwell displays and Santa House were created by The Becker Group, a Baltimore-based company that for more than 50 years has been creating cutting-edge attractions and experiences.
Norman Rockwell sold his first cover painting to The Saturday Evening Post in 1916 at the age of 22. It launched a 47-year career for Rockwell, who painted 322 covers for the magazine. The Saturday Evening Post, still publishing today, gave Rockwell a showcase for his work and an audience larger than any other artist in history. Curtis Publishing Company is the exclusive licensor of the illustrations that appeared on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post.
“I believe visitors to Town Square Las Vegas will be so impressed. They’ll leave wondering how Norman Rockwell was able to capture so much of what makes life special and put it in his paintings – joy, contentment, humility, mischievousness and the many other aspects of life,” said Joan SerVaas, president and CEO of Curtis Publishing Company.
Town Square, being developed by Turnberry Associates and Centra Properties, spans 117 acres on Las Vegas Blvd. at the junction of I-15 and the 215 Beltway. The 1.5 million-square-foot center offers shopping, dining and outdoor strolling. Twenty-two buildings feature more than 70 different facades detailing a collage of Old World and contemporary architectural styles. The center includes an interactive children’s park, Town Square Park, 352,000 square feet of Class A office space, store-front parking, quaint walkways, lush landscaping and more.
Major retailers include RAVE Motion Pictures, Robb & Stucky, Borders Books, H&M, Guitar Center and Whole Foods Market. The Fry’s Electronics store, adjacent to the site, was acquired by Turnberry and Centra, and will be incorporated as a Town Square anchor.
