AVENTURA MALL INTRODUCES NEW CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND BY MIAMI CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS FRIENDS WITH YOU
Educational Play Area Designed as Part of Turnberry for the Arts Initiative

Created by Miami-based artists Sam Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III, known collectively as Friends With You, Rainbow Valley will enrich and inspire children’s creativity in an interactive setting, while also celebrating the spirit of play. The dream world design reflects a whimsical and educational environment using oversized geometric shapes and primary colors. Inspired by a story of the artists’ creation, the playground will guide children through Peekoo, the baby mountain, and his adventures with Cloudy, his new-found friend, to the magical Rainbow Valley. Children will be stimulated and enriched as they play in a sea of vibrant rainbows, clouds, small mountains and crystal clear water represented by Friends With You’s innovative designs.

“In Turnberry’s continual effort to support the arts, it’s especially rewarding to have Miami artists contribute to this one-of-a-kind play area where children and parents can foster creativity together while enjoying the spirit of play,” said Philip S. Goldfarb, President and Chief Operating Officer for Turnberry Associates. “Since a large percent of Aventura Mall visitors have young children, we feel this is the perfect addition to their shopping experience.”

Aventura Mall’s Rainbow Valley is part of Turnberry for the Arts, a new initiative that seeks to enrich and enlighten patrons’ shopping experience through exposure to the arts. The playground was designed as a site-specific installation by the artists, who worked closely with Turnberry for the Arts in its development. In addition to Rainbow Valley, Turnberry for the Arts will feature a collection of contemporary artwork that will premiere at Aventura Mall in early 2007, showcasing works by renowned artists across various mediums.

“It is our hope that Aventura Mall becomes a destination for visitors to enjoy art by internationally recognized and emerging artists whose works are part of world-class museums and important private collections,” said Jacqueline Fletcher, Director of the Turnberry for the Arts program.

Aventura Mall, the largest super-regional shopping center in South Florida, was recently voted Best Mall for Kids for the second consecutive year by South Florida Parenting magazine. Friends With You was formed in 2002 by Borkson and Sandoval, who take their inspiration from popular culture sources to create work that is universally accessible and sends a positive message to inspire creativity and good will. Borkson and Sandoval have participated in more than 20 exhibitions throughout the United States and around the world. Their interactive wishing well installation, Power Pond is currently on view outside the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami, and their 2005 playground installation, Cloud City, was an inaugural exhibition at the museum’s annex, MOCA at Goldman Warehouse in Wynwood during 2005. Among their other works is the Nike Lab commissioned film “Mr. Wizard the Legend of Speed, which was also featured in MOCA’s Optic Nerve film festival in 2005.

Turnberry for the Arts will also include a partnership with MOCA. The museum will bring educational children’s programs, such as its Art Pixie, who teaches children about important modern and contemporary artists in an enriching and fun environment, to Aventura Mall. Turnberry is also sponsoring, for the second consecutive year, the MOCA / Art in America party on December 5, which is a kick-off event for the renowned Art Basel Miami Beach Week.
